General Hike Information

Overnight hikes are limited to 12 participants unless otherwise noted.  Applicants will be accepted as received with preference to those who are members of the DTA.  Non-members will be required to submit an application fee of $15 which will be applied to DTA membership.  One day hikes are open to the general public with fees to cover the expenses of correspondence, publications and other costs. Leader names, addresses and phone numbers are listed for each hike.

Grey Butte                                                                                                May 15  (Friday)

This day hike and the hike on May 17 are offered as activities for the weekend associated with the DTA Board  meeting on May 16 in Madras.  Grey Butte is the high point in the Crooked River Grasslands and offers great views of the Cascade Mountains and the Ochoco Mountains.   There is no fee nor limit in the number of participants.                                                                                  Leader:                        Dan Chamness                                                                      P.O. Deschutes River Canyon                                                                      May 17  (Sunday)

This mostly level hike is on the abandoned Hill Railroad bed from Trout Creek to the Mecca in Jefferson County.  The trip will require a shuttle.  There is no fee nor limit in the number of participants. Leader:                            Dan Chamness

Desert Meadows/Little Blitzen Gorge Loop with llamas                                                                          May 22-25 (Friday-Monday)

This is a llama outing with places available for 6 people, each of which will be assigned a llama to carry their gear. Assisting with the llamas is expected and training is provided.   The outing begins and ends at South Steens Campground.  There is no fee for the outing but donations to support the llamas are gratefully accepted.       Leader:    Lisa Wolf                                                                                      575 E. Public Waterhole (Steens Mountain) w/llamas                                                                                                                    July 9-13  (Thursday-Monday)

This outing with llamas begins and ends at South Steens Campground and covers a total of 29 miles in the Ankle Creek area of Steens Mountain.  The outing is limited to 6 participants who will be responsible for a llama which will carry gear.  There is no fee for the outing but donations to care for the llamas is appreciated.                                                                                                                             Leader:             Lisa Wolf                                                                                         575 E. Central Nevada Backpack                                                               July 18-26  (Saturday-Sunday)

Alta-Toquima Wilderness in the Toquima Range and the Table Mountain Wilderness in the Monitor Range will be hiked on this outing.  If time allows, the Arc Dome Wilderness will be visited as well.  Mount Jefferson at 11,941 feet and the highest point in Nye County will be summited.  The fee is $35 for members and is limited to 12 participants although the leader would be surprised if more than 2 people enrolled.                                                                           Leader:           Dan Chamness                                                                                   P.O. Fish Creek  (Steens Mountain)                                                                 July 31   (Friday)

Fish Creek via Donner & Blitzen River                                         August  1   (Saturday)

Participants will be hiking a new trail along the Donner & Blitzen River to the mouth of Fish Creek.  It is a 10 mile out and back hike with minimal elevation gain.  There is no DTA fee for this hike.                                                                       Leader:               Ross Edginton
